Roxborough Memorial Hospital Nationally Recognized for Commitment to High-quality Stroke Care
The American Heart Association presents Get With The Guidelines – StrokeGoldPlus award for proven dedication to ensuring all stroke patients have access to best practices and life-saving care
Philadelphia, PA (June 14, 2022)– Roxborough Memorial Hospital has once again earned national recognition by the American Heart Association with the Gold Plus/Target Stroke Honor Roll/Target Type 2 Diabetes Honor Roll Get With The Guidelines® award.
The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence.
Stroke is the No. 5 cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the U.S. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts. When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood and oxygen it needs, so brain cells die. Early stroke detection and treatment are key to improving survival, minimizing disability and accelerating recovery times.
Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest evidence- and research-based guidelines. Get With The Guidelines – Stroke is an in-hospital program for improving stroke care by promoting consistent adherence to these guidelines, which can minimize the long-term effects of a stroke and even prevent death.
“This national award recognizes Roxborough Memorial Hospitals care teams’ effective delivery of high-quality patient care through “Get With the Guidelines®”—the AHA’s program of current evidence-based treatment guidelines to improve care for cardiac conditions and stroke,” said Burt Piper, PharmaD, FACHE, CEO of Roxborough Memorial Hospital. “Our hospital has consistently been awarded this recognition since 2020.”
Each year, program participants qualify for the award by demonstrating how their organization has committed to providing quality care for stroke patients. In addition to following treatment guidelines, Get With The Guidelines participants also educate patients to help them manage their health and recovery at home.

For providers, Get With The Guidelines-Stroke offers quality improvement measures, discharge protocols, standing orders and other measurement tools. Providing hospitals with resources and information that make it easier to follow treatment guidelines can help save lives and ultimately reduce overall healthcare costs by lowering readmission rates for stroke patients.
For patients, Get With The Guidelines-Stroke uses the “teachable moment,” the time soon after a patient has had a stroke, when they learn how to manage their risk factors while still in the hospital and recognize the F.A.S.T. warning signs of a stroke.
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is the number five cause of death and a leading cause of adult disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds and nearly 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
In addition, Roxborough Memorial Hospital also received the American Heart Association’s Target: type 2 Honor Roll) award. Target: type 2 Diabetes aims to ensure patients with type 2 diabetes, who might be at higher risk for complications, receive the most up-to-date, evidence-based care when hospitalized due to stroke.
Roxborough Memorial Hospital also met specific scientific guidelines as a Primary Stroke Center, featuring a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department.
