Navigating Grief and Reinvention:

Insights from Steve Wonsiewski, RN., Director of Psychiatric Services-Senior Behavioral Health

The death of a long-term spouse or partner is one of life’s most profound challenges, often leaving individuals feeling lost and disoriented. As they grapple with grief, many find that their identity has become inextricably linked to their loved one, making the process of moving forward seem daunting. According to Steve Wonsiewski, RN., Director of Psychiatric Services-Senior Behavioral Health at Roxborough Memorial Hospital and Suburban Behavioral Health Campus, overcoming this loss requires not only time but also a conscious effort to reinvent oneself.

While cherishing the memories of a deceased partner is crucial, Wonsiewski emphasizes that it often takes time to reach a point where sharing stories and laughter about them feels natural. To aid in this journey of reinvention, he offers several practical strategies:

  1. Engage in New Hobbies or Interests: Exploring new activities or revisiting past passions can be instrumental in helping individuals reclaim their identity. Whether it’s enrolling in a cooking class, picking up an old musical instrument, or starting a new craft, these activities foster personal growth and can provide a sense of accomplishment and joy.

  1. Volunteer for a Cause: Finding a group or cause that resonates with you can create a sense of community and support. Volunteering not only fosters connections with others but also allows individuals to contribute positively to society, creating a meaningful way to honor the memory of their loved one.

  1. Journaling: Writing can be a powerful therapeutic tool. Wonsiewski suggests that journaling offers a safe space to process emotions, reflect on memories, and articulate the journey through grief. This practice can also serve as a record of progress, helping individuals visualize their healing.

For those unsure where to begin, Wonsiewski encourages reaching out for support. Friends and family play a vital role in this process, providing emotional comfort and practical assistance. Additionally, spiritual leaders, such as pastors or ministers, can offer guidance and support during such a disorienting time. Local hospitals often provide listings of community resources, which can further aid in finding the necessary support.

Understanding that grief is a natural part of loss is vital, yet Wonsiewski warns that for some, it can become paralyzing. Emotions such as sadness, anger, and irritability are common during the grieving process. However, individuals should be alert to signs that their grief is interfering with daily functioning. If feelings are affecting the ability to perform essential tasks—such as bathing, cooking, or cleaning—or if there are significant changes in eating or sleeping habits, it may be time to seek professional help. Additionally, thoughts of self-harm should never be ignored and warrant immediate attention.

Caring for one’s physical health is equally important during this time. Wonsiewski stresses that maintaining a proper diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and scheduling health check-ups can help mitigate the stress that often accompanies grief. These practices not only support emotional well-being but also empower individuals to face the challenges of loss with resilience.

In conclusion, the journey through grief is complex and deeply personal. While the pain of losing a long-term partner can feel insurmountable, it is also an opportunity for growth and reinvention. By embracing new experiences, seeking support, and prioritizing self-care, individuals can begin to navigate their way toward healing and rediscovering their identity in the aftermath of loss.
