- [Interventional Radiology](https://roxboroughmemorial.com/our-services/diagnostic-imaging/interventional-radiology/): Interventional Radiology (abbreviated IR) is a subspecialty of radiology in which minimally invasive procedures are performed using image guidance. Some of these procedures are done for purely diagnostic purposes (e.g., angiogram), while others are done for treatment purposes (e.g., angioplasty). Pictures (images) are used to direct these procedures, which are usually done with needles or other tiny instruments like small tubes called catheters. The images provide road maps that allow the Interventional Radiologist to guide these instruments through the body to the areas of interest.
- [Dexa](https://roxboroughmemorial.com/our-services/diagnostic-imaging/dexa/): Bone densitometry is a type of imaging examination that measures your bone mineral density, which is a sign of bone strength. Bones that are not very dense become brittle and weak and are more likely to break. A number of conditions cause a loss of bone mass, such as osteoporosis, some inherited diseases or treatments for chronic diseases. During a DEXA scan, density measurements are taken of bones at specific areas of your body. Those measurements then are compared to a database of “normal” individuals of your same age, sex and race. The measurements help determine the presence of osteoporosis and can be used to estimate your risk of bone fracture. If you are being treated for bone loss, a follow-up DEXA scan can show if the therapy is working.
- [Magnetic Resonance Imaging](https://roxboroughmemorial.com/our-services/diagnostic-imaging/magnetic-resonance-imaging/): Magnetic Resonance Imaging, or MRI, is an advanced, state-of-the-art diagnostic test, which produces very clear pictures or images of the human body without the use of X-rays. This technology enables physicians to detect developing diseases or abnormalities earlier than ever before. MRI uses a powerful - but harmless - magnetic field and radiowaves like the kind that transmit your favorite FM music. The combination of radiowaves and magnetic field produce detailed images of body structures such as the brain, the spine and other vital organs.
- [Ultrasound](https://roxboroughmemorial.com/our-services/diagnostic-imaging/ultrasound/): Ultrasound imaging, also called ultrasound scanning or sonography, involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Ultrasound exams do not use ionizing radiation (as used in x-rays). Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they can show the structure and movement of the body’s internal organs, as well as blood flowing through blood vessels. Ultrasound imaging is a noninvasive medical test that helps physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions.
- [Mammography](https://roxboroughmemorial.com/our-services/diagnostic-imaging/mammography/): Mammography is an x-ray procedure that uses low-dose radiation to create an image of breast tissue. Mammography is the best way to find breast cancer early, because it can detect breast lumps up to two years before they can be felt. Finding a lump early significantly improves a woman’s chance of successful treatment. The American Cancer Society recommends that women receive a mammogram once a year after age 40. Women at high risk should have mammograms more often. Magnetic resonance imaging exams also are recommended for women at moderate-to-high risk.

It allows physicians to visualize internal structures in great detail, which is essential for diagnosing various medical conditions. The ability to examine slices of the body helps in identifying abnormalities such as tumors, bleeding, and organ irregularities.

- [Nuclear Medicine](https://roxboroughmemorial.com/our-services/diagnostic-imaging/nuclear-medicine/): A nuclear medicine procedure is sometimes described as an "inside-out" x-ray because it records radiation emitting from the patient's body rather than radiation that is directed through the patient's body. Nuclear medicine procedures use small amounts of radioactive materials, called radiopharmaceuticals, to create images of anatomy. Radiopharmaceuticals are substances that are attracted to specific organs, bones or tissues. They are introduced into the patient's body by injection, swallowing or inhalation. As the radiopharmaceutical travels through the body, it produces radioactive emissions. A special type of camera detects these emissions in the organ, bone or tissue being imaged and then records the information on a computer screen or on film.
