Expert Medical Staff To Address Your Patients Needs
The Comprehensive Wound Healing Center at Roxborough Memorial
Hospital provides a multidisciplinary program of treatment and support
services for the cost-effective management of acute and chronic problem
wounds. Our continuum of care includes wound assessment, treatment
based on advanced medical methodologies, pain management, patient
education and support services, including hyperbaric therapy.
Since problem wounds are often associated with other underlying
medical conditions, our program is specifically designed to integrate
wound care with ongoing health care. We coordinate wound treatment
plans with the patients primary care and specialty care physicians help
to ensure that each patients individual needs are addressed.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is Oxygen, Pure and Simple
The air we breathe contains 21% oxygen. Hyperbaric oxygen
therapy provides 100% pure oxygen in a pressurized chamber. This
hyperbaric (or high pressure) dose of oxygen may offer distinct
therapeutic benefits and can be used to treat a variety of illnesses.
It may be the primary treatment for some disorders, but its often
combined with antibiotics, wound care and/or surgery.
How it Works
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy greatly
increases the amount of oxygen delivered to body tissues by the blood.
It is important to note that the potential benefits of hyperbaric oxygen
therapy may result from an oxygen-enriched bloodstream and not from the
oxygen's direct contact with wounds. This is why wound dressings
are usually left in place during treatment. The doctor will
discuss the specific reason for the referral to hyperbaric therapy, but
generally this treatment may provide one or more of the following
effects:
Enhanced wound healing
Increased oxygen delivery
to injured tissue
Improved infection control
Greater blood vessel formation
Preservation of damaged
tissues
Elimination and reduced effects of toxic
substances
